BEYOND: Two Souls

BEYOND: Two Souls is an interactive drama action-adventure video game released in 2013 by Quantic Dream. Player can play two characters in the game – as Jodie Holmes or as Aiden, a entity linked to Jodie through psychic link since birth. Story is about Jodie growing from youth to adulthood while learning to control Aiden and the powers they share. Character is portrayed by actress Ellen Page, who worked with other cast in a year-long project in game studio performing on-set voice acting and motion capture acting.

I’ve bought this game as a Quantic Dream Collection with Heavy Rain (I’ve still to play the game which was released in 2010 but I hear it’s even better than this in the title) and found it really enjoyable and interesting. What struck me the most beside good mystery was its non-linear storytelling which you can also play it in chronological order from the start. At cut scenes often you have the ability to react certain way, as in decision-based games Telltale makes. Also this was my first game on PlayStation that I had to shake controller up and down and rotate left/right which was also kind of cool.

I noticed this game got low ratings on IGN, my go-to site for game reviews. They criticize gaming experience being too passive and unrewarding and a plot too muddy and unfocused. That’s because they are hardcore gamers. I play games as a hobby and thus I’m not very skillful with controller so combating is pretty much nightmare for me. That’s also the case why I choose auto-aim feature if possible. Instead I like games like Beyond; with strong story and full of emotions (other games like this: Uncharted 4, The Last of Us, Brothers: Tale of Two Sons).
