First impressions of ASUS X540UV

Yesterday a new laptop arrived at home. It’s a budget one and I spotted a pretty good deal with 90 € off. I’ve decided for a purchase because the previous has been acting funny recently with on and off weird issues with display. It still works and does the job but with external monitor pluged-in. So it has became a stationary one which defeats the purpose of laptops.

The first think I observed was the lightness of a package. ASUS X540UV uses SSD and no DVD unit drive which lowers the total weight to 2 kilogams.

Next are ports: it has 3 for USB, 1 for HDMI, memory card and sound. Those are all on the left side. On the right side there’s nothing. The only thing I miss a little is a Ethernet port because it could come in handy from a time to time.

I have a little experiences with upgrading hardware components in a laptop (RAM) so I checked on a YouTube how would one open a laptop with similar internal design. Compared to my previous laptop, I have to say it’s less convenient. My previous laptop only required you to unscrew two screws and remove only a part of bottom surface to be able to add additional RAM but with the new one you have to remove the whole bottom surface and internally you have to unscrew some component, flip it, add RAM and repeat the process in reverse order. I decided not to do this myself since it’s not a pressing issue – my previous laptop had only 4 GB but new one has 8 GB.

Solid State Drive (SSD) improved my laptop’s performance

Yesterday I was delivered my first SSD which I’ve brought over the internet and installed it into my 2-year-old laptop. And result is really what they are saying about SSDs on the internet – improved performance in every aspect, except maybe internet connection speed.

My laptop is running Ubuntu operational system and I use it for entertainment (watching TV movies/shows and browsing the internet) and programming (web development). For entertainment HDD is just fine but for web development it’s been bothering me for quite some time how slow the system was. While doing web development you’re running couple of resource-hungry processes – at minimum internet browser, code editor (I use Atom and WebStorm) and development server, possible more than one, that watches for file change, compiles source code and reloads the browser.

Before deciding to buy SSD I was also fiddling with the idea to buy additional RAM since my laptop supports it (up to 8 GB). After researching the internet I decided to buy SSD first and watch RAM consumption since there was information that reading/loading from SSD also takes less RAM. That proved to be true but change were not as significant as I thought at first. So I’ll definitely buy additional RAM.


At the end all this upgrade will cost me around 160 € (laptop was 530 €) which is nothing compared to a price of a new laptop. Laptops that suit my needs (more or equal than 8 GB of RAM, SSD, good processor and graphics card) start at 800 €.

E-bralnik Kindle Paperwhite

Od včeraj se je pričela moja e-bralna izkušnja. Z mimovrste=) je namreč prispel Kindle Paperwhite, ki sem si ga naročil v nedeljo. E-bralnik sem si želel že precej dolgo časa, razlog pa ni ta, ker bi bil “gadget freak”, tehnološki navdušenec ali pa zato, da bi šel v korak s časom. Razlog je v tem, da sem do sedaj v slovenščini prebral kar nekaj knjig, ki so del serij, a ostali deli še niso bili prevedeni, jaz pa nimam časa čakati na prevode.

Mislim, da je splošno znano, kako lahko je danes pridobiti neko digitalno vsebino na svoj računalnik. Tudi branje v angleškem jeziku mi ne predstavlja nobenih ovire. Če pa naletim na kakšno neznano besedo, pa ima Kindle vgrajen slovar, pri čemer ga aktiviram s pridržanjem prsta nad besedo. Če besede ne najde v slovarju, jo poskuša poiskati še na Wikipedii, saj se Kindle lahko poveže z internetom. E-bralnik vsebuje tudi funkcijo Vocabulary Builder, ki shranjuje vse besede, katerih pomen se je iskal.

Pred samim nakupom sem imel pomisleke, ali naj kupim kindla z oglasi ali brez njih (slednji je sicer precej dražji). Odločil sem se za tistega z oglasi in izkazalo se je, da oglasi sploh niso vsiljivi – pokažejo se le takrat, ko je naprava izključena. Pa tudi lepo izpade.

Izključen Kindle Paperwhite

HDTV TV Samsung T23C350EW

Pred slabimi štirimi meseci sem si za rojstnodnevno darilo kupil monitor znamke Samsung, model T23C350EW za potrebe po večji delovni površini. Gre za monitor z dolžino diagonale 58,4 cm (23”) in s polno HD ločljivostjo 1920×1080. Posebnost modela je tudi ta, da ima vgrajen TV tuner – z njim je mogoče gledati TV programe preko satelitske antene ali TV komunikatorja (priložen je tudi daljinec).

Monitor se je v tem času izkazal za dober nakup. Slika je namreč izredno dobra. Všeč mi je, da poleg 2 HDMI priključkov vsebuje še USB priključek – za predvajanje filmov in slik preko USB medija. Slednji se dobro kombinira s priključkom za zunanje zvočnike (slušalke). Sicer ima tudi vgrajene zvočnike, a se mi osebno ne zdijo dobri.

Slabih izkušenj z njim nimam, malo moti le to, da stojalo ni upogljivo, tako da je višina oči na 3/4 višine monitorja. To se sicer da rešiti tako, da se dvigne monitor s podstavkom, a se mi upira po dodatni šari na delovni mizi.

Pravilna priključitev USB kabla v prvo

Ker je pravilna priključitev USB kabla v USB vtičnik že v prvem poskusu očitno kar velik problem, sem se odločil, da v tem zapisu opišem, kako hitro ugotoviti, kako v prvo priključiti USB kabel z le malo več zavedanja okolice.

Preprost način
Skoraj vsak priključek kabla ima na eni strani simbol tridenta, razviden iz zgornje slike USB priključka. Ta simbol nam pove, da je tisto zgornja stran USB priključka.

Seveda pa obstajajo tudi računalniki, pri katerih so USB vtičniki postavljeni v navpični smeri (npr. škatla računalnika je postavljena pokonci) – tam pa velja, da zgornja stran USB priključka gleda stran od najbližjega roba škatle. Ampak to je že preveč komplicirano, zato uporabljam drugi, bolj zanesljiv način.

Zanesljiv način
Pogledaš USB priključek od kabla in si zapomniš, na kateri strani je struktura, ki je na zgodnji sliki bele barve. Nato od blizu pogledaš še USB vtičnik in v njem poiščeš jeziček. Beli del priključka in jeziček vtiča si morata ležati nasproti, da sicer pride do kontakta.
